I was offered a volunteering opportunity to assist a Veterinary Medicine Ph.D. candidate with her research regarding the effects of climate change on sea stars. My role in the project included, but was not limited to, maintaining sea star water quality and completing other animal husbandry needs as they become necessary.

  • Maintained and amended water quality within 48 14-gallon, closed-system tanks and 6 100-gallon, closed-system tanks

  • Performed daily water quality testing including nitrate, nitrite, ammonia, alkalinity, YSI measurements (pH, DO, temperature, and salinity)

  • Executed water changes using a recirculating aquaculture system

  • Prepared food and hand-fed starfish weekly
